For students and teachers, Labor Day used to be the marker for the start of a new school year, but almost everyone has jumped the gun by now, in some parts of the South by almost a month now. So, let’s stay with the holiday’s original meaning – celebrating workers and their rights to organize for fair wages, humane work hours and protected holidays.
I’m going to invoke the latter to declare a rare day off this weekend. Even the woman I consider the Queen of all Bloggers and Substackers, Heather Cox Richardson, takes an occasional day off and substitutes a photo for her usual informative words instead. I don’t have a picture for you, just a plea for understanding.
I hadn’t really intended to take this short break. I tried, really tried to put something together, but multiple disruptions and just plain inertia got in the way. So, in honor of Labor Day, I’m going to dedicate this week off to my Daddy, who labored in New York’s Garment Center for more than half a century, turning out women’s coats for all seasons that found their way to the country’s finest department stores. It put food on our table, but the pay was inadequate and the pension was meager
